Dishwasher Not Draining? A Bay Area Troubleshooting Guide

Start With the Obvious

If the dishwasher stopped mid-cycle, close the door and run the cancel/drain cycle — it may simply need to finish draining. If water remains after a full drain cycle, work through the checks below.

Common Causes of a Dishwasher That Won't Drain

1. A Clogged Filter

Most modern dishwashers have a removable filter at the bottom. Food debris, glass, labels, and grease block water flow. Pull the lower rack, twist out the filter, rinse it, and clear the sump area. Don't force parts that won't release.

2. A Blocked Air Gap

Many Bay Area kitchens use an air gap — the small chrome or plastic cylinder beside the faucet. If it clogs, the dishwasher won't drain. Pop the cap and clear debris. If water sprays from it while draining, the hose to the disposal may be blocked.

3. The Garbage Disposal Knockout Plug

If a disposal was recently installed, the knockout plug may still be in place — which blocks dishwasher drainage entirely. This is a common installation oversight. If you're not comfortable disconnecting the hose, call a technician or plumber.

4. A Kinked or Clogged Drain Hose

The hose under the sink can kink, sag, or clog. Make sure it has a proper high loop and isn't crushed behind stored items.

5. A Failed Drain Pump

If the filter, air gap, disposal connection, and hose are all clear, the drain pump may be jammed or failed. You may hear a hum or click — or no drain sound at all.

6. A Leak Sensor or Error Code

Safe Troubleshooting Steps

1. Run cancel/drain.
2. Remove standing water with a cup and towel.
3. Clean the filter.
4. Check and clear the air gap.
5. Look under the sink for a kinked or clogged hose.
6. Check whether the disposal was recently replaced.
7. Stop if you see a leak, an error code, a burning smell, or repeated drain failure.
